An Orthodox wedding in Lefkara village, Larnaca

A stone church, candlelight and the narrow lanes of a lace-making village in the hills.

Filmed at Lefkara village

The day

A destination wedding with a full Greek Orthodox ceremony, held in a stone church in the heart of Lefkara. Candlelight, hymns and the crowning ritual, then the walk around the altar, each part of the tradition kept as it should be.

After the ceremony we walked through the village for portraits, and the day carried on into an evening of Cypriot music, food and dancing.

The village

Lefkara sits in the hills between Larnaca and Limassol and is known across Cyprus for its lace and its silverwork. Narrow stone lanes, old houses with wooden doors and bougainvillea over the walls make the whole village a setting, with views towards the mountains as the sun goes down.

Filming an Orthodox ceremony

An Orthodox ceremony has its own order and its own moments, and the church is often small and dim. We film quietly and without lights in the couple’s faces, and we know where to be for the crowns, the common cup and the walk around the altar.

The vows and readings are recorded with dedicated microphones, so the hymns and the words stay clear in the film.

The film
